Q. Are your bird feeders "squirrel proof" ?
A. This is probably our most frequently asked question - Unfortunately, the answer is no. However, our feeders are very "squirrel resistant", meaning that our products cannot be penetrated or be chewed apart by squirrels. Our own experience shows that the squirrels give up rather quickly.
There are also certain measures one can take to discourage the pesky critters, such as using a wire extension to hang your feeder from a tree branch. The squirrels will be less likely to jump onto your feeder if they don't have a way to get off of it. Be sure to place pole mounted feeders far enough from tree limbs to discourage them from even attempting such a jump.
Another thing you can do is provide the squirrels with their own fodder somewhere far away from your feeders.
Q. Can my acorn birdhouse or feeders remain outdoors during the winter ?
A. YES! Absolutely! There is no need to worry about freezing cold temperatures, snow or ice. Our houses and feeders are made to remain outdoors year-round. In fact, your birds will love you for it!
Q. Where's the perch ?
A. Our Nuthouse birdhouse, Nuthouse Café feeder, Chickadee Inn feeder, suet feeder and thistle feeder were all designed and created especially for the smaller "clinging" songbird species and common woodpeckers. Chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, goldfinches, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, etc... All these birds are capable of clinging directly onto the feeder without a perch.
This "perch-less" design discourages the larger, more aggressive birds which could frighten away the very birds you wish to attract. You'll be amazed to see how well they work!
Q. Why do you recommend oil sunflower seeds ? Can I use other seeds ?
A. There are two reasons we recommend black oil sunflower seeds - First, because the stainless steel mesh we use in our Nuthouse Café is not large enough for the larger stripped sunflower seeds to be extracted - However, the main reason we recommend them is because black oil sunflower seeds are the most favored attractant in most areas of the country - and, they attract the most favorable species, as well.
Black oil sunflower seeds also contain a higher fat content, and are much easier for smaller birds to handle and to penetrate - they also possess a greater meat to shell ratio, meaning more nutrition and less waste (shells).
Yes you can experiment with various seed mixes in our All Bird Café since the stainless steel mesh is slightly larger and the seed tray will collect the smaller particles that pass through the mesh.
Q. How can I attract bluebirds to my Bluebird Chateau ?
A. For a number of years, the Eastern Bluebird population was in sharp decline, but has since seen a rise in population, primarily due to man-made bluebird "boxes".
We have received many testimonials from some of our customers claiming our Bluebird Chateau to be the best! But, there are various factors involved in attracting bluebirds - such as best location, which direction it should face, how high off the ground should it be, is it better out in the open or among trees... etc, etc..
Our advice is visit the web site of the
North American Bluebird Society. There, you will find a ton of information to help you attract and enjoy these very special and very beautiful songbirds.
